A few months ago. a fictional federal agency, let's call it the Department of Public Assistance (DPA), rolled out an AI system designed to streamline eligibility determinations for a national benefits program.


The system promised efficiency, accuracy, and millions in taxpayer savings. Within weeks, thousands of applications were processed that would have taken human analysts months.


And then the complaints started rolling in.
